Ruang Sinema “The Story of Plastic” Raising Public Awareness of the Plastic Crisis in a Series of Open Initiatives Days

Jakarta, 1 August 2025 — Open Initiatives Day was held once again through a collaboration between Dietplastik Indonesia and Trash Hero Jakarta, presenting the program Ruang Sinema: The Story of Plastic at Library Coffee, Ruang & Tempo. This activity was part of the Jaga Jagat series, Open Initiatives Day’s flagship program that focuses on sustainability issues and collective action to protect the planet.

The event, which took place from 18.00 to 21.00 WIB, featured two main speakers: Tiza Mafira, Executive Director of Dietplastik Indonesia and a plastic reduction advocate who also appears in the documentary The Story of Plastic; and I Gusti Krishna Aditama, Chapter Leader of Trash Hero Jakarta. Through a shared film screening and public discussion, participants were invited to gain a deeper understanding of the root causes of the global plastic crisis, ranging from industrial production systems and consumption patterns to their impacts on health and ecosystems.

The documentary provided a comprehensive perspective on the plastic industry value chain and the environmental inequalities it creates. In the post-screening discussion, Tiza emphasized the importance of structural change through policy, innovation, and more responsible consumption practices. Krishna shared community-based experiences in driving on-the-ground action, including public education initiatives and plastic waste reduction campaigns in public spaces.

As part of the Jaga Jagat series, the Ruang Sinema format was designed not merely as a film screening, but as a space for collective reflection. More than 25 participants from diverse backgrounds—including students, environmental activists, creative workers, and the general public—actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and identified actions they could implement within their own communities.

Following the activity, participants demonstrated an increased understanding of the plastic life cycle, its social and environmental impacts, and the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing the plastic crisis. Several follow-up initiatives emerged, such as small-scale campaigns to reduce single-use plastics and the exploration of collaborations with environmental communities.

This program directly contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 and SDG 15 (Life Below Water and Life on Land), as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The activity also strengthened public literacy, opened inclusive dialogue spaces, and expanded collaborative networks to support sustainable, community-level solutions.

Through the Jaga Jagat series, Open Initiatives Day will continue to deliver programs that foster critical understanding, tangible action, and cross-stakeholder collaboration in efforts to protect the planet.
